How To Make Homemade Mashed Potatoes

IMG_3458Learn how to make homemade mashed potatoes and you have a great side dish for almost any meal, not just Thanksgiving turkey. And since these potatoes come together pretty quickly, there’s really no excuse for not making them more often, even on week nights, after a day’s worth of work.

I’ve tried to make this as simple as possible, using only one pot or pan, to aide in clean up. This recipe is very straight forward, but allows for quite a few variations, depending upon your tastes. For instance, garlic would seem t make a very nice addition, or perhaps different kinds of cheese. I prefer to add Parmesan cheese, but I think my son would prefer if I substituted blue cheese instead.

Food For Thought

There’s no doubt that this recipe, as simple as it is, has changed a few times over the years as my eating philosophy has evolved and matured.  Luckily for me, there are only a few ingredients to worry about, but each one is important enough in the final dish, to spend a few minutes thinking about whether or not it belongs on my dinner table.

Obviously, potatoes come first to mind.  And it seems that potatoes are consistently on the Dirty Dozen list of foods not to eat unless they are organic, due to the large amounts of pesticides used in their production.  That’s good enough for me, organic it is, and they really aren’t too much more expensive, which is an added bonus.

The butter and cream touch on the same issues for me.  Gone are the days where I would buy dairy products without any thought of where they came from, but now I insist on using butter, milk or cream that comes from pastured raised cattle humanely treated without the addition of hormones and antibiotics.  Once you locate a good source, there really is no more trouble finding these products than more conventional dairy offerings.

I am still working my way through my cheese issues.  It seems to be very difficult to find quality organic cheese and many manufacturers won’t even attempt to get the paperwork in order to be certified organic.  So I have taken to asking lots of questions of the staff at my local grocery that I frequent the most, and get a good idea of which vendors are producing the types of cheese that I would be most comfortable with.  Ideally, even if the vendors are not certified organic, they are raising their animals, and their cheese, in the same responsible manner and are very concerned with the well being of their livestock, their customers, and their pastures.


3-4 large baking potatoes
1 pint heavy cream
2-3 tablespoons butter
1/4 – 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
salt and pepper to taste

How To Make Homemade Mashed Potatoes

  1. Peel potatoes and chop into 1/2 inch pieces, place into pot of water
  2. Bring water to boil and then simmer for 20-30 minutes until potatoes are fork tender
  3. Drain potatoes in strainer and then place empty pot back on stove over medium heat
  4. Add cream and butter to pot, and season with salt and pepper
  5. Bring to boil and then turn heat off
  6. Add potatoes and cheese to cream in the pot
  7. Use a potato masher or some other utensil to mash and combine all ingredients
  8. Let site for a few minutes to allow your homemade mashed potatoes thicken up a bit, then serve warm
